dcterms:description
This article deals with the role of the dog in human society and its relationship to human health. A long and deliberate process of breeding has brought out the properties in the dog regarded by people as positive and beneficial. The dog model is used to study a number of phenomena, particularly vocal and body language, psychology and behaviour. Manipulation of the dog’s genetic material allows for human disease to be studied as well. On the basis of his olfactory capabilities, the dog can detect a number of illnesses in humans. Canistherapy is highly effective in helping treat the symptoms of people with health disorders; and it complements classical pharmacological treatment for a number of illnesses. Dogs can help seniors regain their will to live by becoming a friend and confidant. Even a perfectly healthy person can benefit from having a dog around, helping him to keep fit and enjoy a higher quality of life.
