Abstract: In Antarctics, physiologically active state of moses and lichens depends on availability of liquid water, light and physiological temperature. In the field, photosynthesis of these poikilohydric organisms might be sensitively monitored by chlorophyll fluorescence. Fluorometric measurements are a part of our long-term research program aimed to the evaluation physiological response to local climate and manipulated warming using open top chambers (OTCs). Within 2007-2009, nine OTCs were established in the Northern part of the James Ross Island in a vicinity of the Czech Antarctic station Johann Gregor Mendel (63 o 50 S, 57o 50 W). The OTCs were installed over typical vegetation cover: (I) moss carpet (Bryum sp.) with several individual spots of lichen, (II) lichens Usnea antarctica and Umbilicaria decussata located on basaltic stones, (III) inicial stages of vegetation succession forming algal biofilms and tiny spots of microlichens on deglaciated stony substrates.
