The soil-air exchange is the key process that controls the levels of many POPs present in soils and/or air. Laboratory simulations of POPs volatilization from the soil surfaces is needed, and it is an integral component of the fate models. The volatilization chamber, designed for the direct measurement of POPs volatilization fluxes from the soil in laboratory conditions was tested within the scope of this study. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were chosen as the model compounds. They were applied on the surface of the soil layer, placed in the volatilization chamber. The air above the soil was sampled using the high-volume air sampler. Positive linear correlation between PCBs volatilization fluxes and total amount of PCBs was found. PCBs volatilization rate was greatly influenced by the temperature, and the air and soil humidity inside the chamber.
