Mineralization and ossification in the human costal cartilages were studied radiologically. The aim of our study was to evaluate differences between males and females with respect to patterns of costal cartilage calcification and also with respect to ageing. Further radiograms of 18 chest plates were obtained at routine necropsy of cadavers. The radiograms were examined for pattern of ossification of the costal cartilage. The first rib cartilages were not considered because there are no sex differences. The lower ribs exhibit sexual dimorphism. Mineralization and ossification changes appear at the end of puberty and their occurrence increases with age. The sexual difference in pattern of human costal cartilages is statistically significant and thus highly predictive of sex determination. Radiologicky jsme hodnotili mineralizaci a osifikaci lidských žeberních chrupavek. Cílem studie bylo zhodnocení rozdílů v typu kalcifikace žeberních chrupavek mezi muži a ženami s přihlédnutím k věku. Materiálem v této studio bylo 1044 radiogramů hrudníku a břicha (537 mužů a 507 žen z české populace) z Radiologické kliniky. Dalších 18 radiogramů hrudních košů bylo získáno při rutinních pitvách zemřelých. Na radiogramech byl hodnocen typ osifikace žeberních chrupavek. Chrupavky prvního žebra nebyly hodnoceny, protože nevykazují pohlavní rozdíly. Nižší žebra vykazují pohlavní dimorfismus. Změny v mineralizaci a osifikaci se objevují na konci puberty a jejich výskyt stoupá s věkem. Pohlavní rozdíly v charakteru žeberních chrupavek jsou u lidí statisticky významné, a tak vysoce prediktivní v určování pohlaví. (863 znaků)
