dcterms:description
Tourette syndrome is characterized by motor and phonic tics that fluctuate in distribution, frequency, and severity, with a prevalence of 1% to 2%. It is often associated with poor impulse control, obsessive compulsive traits, mood disorders, and migraine. An abnormally reduced activity of prefrontal dopamine neurons and an enhanced dopamine neurotransmission in the striatum and nucleus accumbens may play a significant role in this syndrome. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder characterized by alternating episodes of mania/hypomania and depression, with high comorbidity rates of anxiety disorders and, like Tourette syndrome, has a strong association with migraine. Prevalence rates vary from 1% to 2%. A large proportion of patients with bipolar disorder are treated with a wide range of polypharmacy, despite inconclusive studies on combination treatments.
