dcterms:description
The relative accumulation of dehydrin proteins (WCS120 in wheat and DHN5 in barley)has been studied in a set of 11 wheat and 10 barley cultivars encompassing both growth habits (spring and winter growth habit) and covering a broad range of acquired frost tolerance. The plants have been divided into four sets subjected to four different growth temperatures 20 C, 15 C, 10 C and 5 C. Densitometric analysis of dehydrin protein relative accumulation has revealed an exponential increase in dehydrin relative accumulation with a temperature decrease in the range from 20 C to 5 C. The most frost-tolerant winter wheat and barley cultivars can be distinguished from the less tolerant winter ones at dehydrin protein level even at 20 C which is an optimum growth temperature. A significant correlation between maximum acquired frost tolerance and dehydrin protein relative accumulation has been for both wheat and barley sets at all growth temperatures studied.
