The organic C content in the upper layer of arable soils is locally specific. The differences among the sites may surpass 2% C while the long-term effect of organic and mineral fertilisation reached 0.2 to 0.3% C, at the maximum. Determination of the organic C content in topsoil alone, therefore, cannot be sufficient to decide whether the soil organic matter content is low, optimal or luxury. It is necessary to consider other soil properties and characteristics of the soil organic matter – its qualitative parameters.
