Barley microsatelůlite langth polymorphism was tested in this study for its ability to produce specific DNA profiles. Fourteen microsatellite loci were examined across 22 cultivars registered in the Czech Republic. The diversity index of individual mark ers varied from 0.368 to 2.413. The most powerful marker HVM40 identified 11 different alleles and distinguished among all the studied cultivars, even when mostly two-row spring barley genotypes were examined, which are known to have similar well-balanc ed genetic background. The approach was found to be suitable for cultivar differentiation as a possible complementary system to morphological and protein spectra analyses.
