Clonality assay based on investigation of X-chromosome inactivation patterns of HUMARA gene was performed in 29 female patients with primary MDS. Peripheral blood clonal granulocytes were present in 11 out of 12 patients with RCMD in contrast to only 1 out of 7 females with RA according to the WHO classification. Similar results were found in CD 14+ subpopulation in peripheral blood and in both subpopulations in bone marrow. Patients with clonal subpopulations had significantly poorer prognosis than those with non-clonal subpopulations.
