In this study we present two multi-scalar drought indices: the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The SPI is a well known precipitation index, and has been already used in regional classification of climatic droughts in the Czech Republic. The SPEI is a newly application drought index and has the capacity to include the effect of evapotranspiration on drought conditions. We analysed drought evolution in the lowland regions in the Czech Republic from 1901 to 2010, and indentified differences between the effects of precipitation variability and evapotranspiration on evolution of drought severity, frequency and duration.
