dcterms:description
Surface ozone became one of the most serious environmental problems in Central Europe in the last decade. The task of this study is to evaluate the results of surface ozone measurements at the Czech GAW and EMEP stations (Košetice and Svratouch), which represent the regional scale of the Czech Republic, in the period 1992-1999. The results show, that the annual mean surface ozone concentration in rural areas of the Czech Republic stabilised in the nineties at a relatively high level and has not increased further. Throughout the period under consideration, the mean surface ozone concentration at Czech regional stations was considerably higher than at the suburban station at Libuš in Prague. The number of episodes in which the ambient pollution limit was exceeded dropped rapidly in the second half of the nineties. Situations in which the surface ozone concentrations increase above the ambient pollution limit usually occur in longer periods with typical summer weather (extreme temperature, cloudless days, high intensity of solar radiation). During such episodes, extensive regions on a scale which goes beyond the borders of the Czech Republic are progressively affected. The evaluation of the influence of surface ozone on forest ecosystems and agricultural crops using the internationally used AOT40 index implies that, not only in rural areas, but practically throughout the Czech Republic, critical levels at which forest ecosystems and agricultural crops are damaged, are exceeded in the long term. Comparison of AOT40 indexes at stations of the EMEP programme documents the fact that rural areas of the Czech Republic are among the most stressed areas of the European continent from the point of view of the negative influences of tropospheric ozone on agricultural crops and forest ecosystems Surface ozone became one of the most serious environmental problems in Central Europe in the last decade.
