dcterms:description
The aim of the proposal is to establish the underlying causes and mechanisms for the unexpected behavior of interstitial elemental additions to metastable beta titanium alloys designed for biomedical applications. This behavior includes a minimum in the elastic modulus approaching to that of bone, a variation in deformation mode and a rapid increase in both the aging kinetics and strength levels obtained in these alloys with increasing oxygen content. Important output of the project should be the design of a new type of the alloy having the properties which would meet continuously increasing requirements of orthopedic applications, in particular those of implants and joint replacements which are in direct contact with the bone. This proposal outlines an investigation to be conducted jointly by a Czech-US team lead by Associate Professor Milos Janecek of the Faculty of mathematics and Physics of the Charles University, Prague and Prof. H.J. Rack, Clemson University, Clemson, SC, USA.

The objective of the project was the detail investigation and optimizing of properties of Ti based alloys which are used as the material for big joint implants (hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, etc.). The following materials were investigated:a) Ti6Al4V (classical alpha+beta Ti alloy), b) Ti-4.5Fe-6.8Mo-1.5Al (TIMETAL LCB)- metastable beta-Ti alloy, c) Ti15Mo (model beta-Ti alloy). Nosným tématem projektu bylo podrobné studium a optimalizace vlastnosti slitin Ti, které se používají jako materiál pro implantáty velkých tělních kloubů (kyčel, koleno, rameno, loket, atd.). Byly studovány tyto materiály:a) Ti6Al4V (klasická slitina alfa+beta),b) Ti-4.5Fe-6.8Mo-1.5Al (TIMETAL LCB) - metastabilní slitina beta-Ti,c) Ti15Mo (modelová slitina beta-Ti).
