- The film Temno (r. Karel Steklý, 1950), an adaption of the 1915 novel of the same name by Alois Jirásek, is a product of not just one, but two key propaganda campaigns of the just-established Commusnist régime in Czechoslovakia, the Jirásek Campaign and the Anti-Church (Anti-Catholic) Campaign. The film images of history, which are deformed in the double vice of nationalist and class ideology, had comparatively little in common with Jirásek's work. This was true not only of Temno by Karel Steklý, but also of Husitská revoluční trilogie (Hussite Revolution Trilogy, 1954-1957) by Otakar Vávra, as well as other films made as part of the Jirásek Campaign. On the other hand, these films based their credibility on borrowing their content and form from traditional historical models. The Communists found consensus with nation in the age-old struggle against the Germans. They declared themselves, in the words of the Communist functionary and ideologist Zdeněk Nejedlý, 'heirs to the great traditions of the Czech nation', in particular the tradition of the Hussite revolution. Part of the adopted judgmental stereotypes was the negative counterpart of Hussitism, represented by the disaster of the White Montain and three centuries of servitude, in short, the Age of Darkness (doba temna). The Communists, in contriving a continuity and legitimacy of their régime, were thus drawing on the collective memory of the nation. At the same time they fundamentally recast that history, particularly by means of cinema, what Lenin called the 'most important art'. Nevertheless, that same 'memory' enabled opponents of the régime to perceive the film Temno in an anti-régime way, making Koniáš and the Jesuits relevant to the present. (en)
