  • Nowadays the lack of own fruit production and rapidly decreasing tendency of fruit consumption have become more and more topical problem. The research dealing with fruit consumption and about knowledge of fruit included 444 pupils from primary schools in the Levice region. The consumption addition of this worsening situation is reflected in schools in dietary habits of pupils consuming lesser amount of fruit (only 37% of pupils consume fruit two or more times a day) and in the most cases only their favourable - apple (62%) or bananas (17%). On the other hand, it is positive that pupils bring fruit to school as a part of elevenses (69%) and a very high level of pupil's knowledge exists about health benefits of fresh fruit because of the exceptional high level of vitamins especially ascorbic acid (in this way pupils mentioned lemon - 53%, apple - 23%, orange 10%) and mineral matters (85% of respondents), dietary fiber (9%) or other healthy components not described in details (6%). In this way education in school is also very helpful, 73% of pupils claimed that they are taught about health benefits of fruit within biology or other lessons (17%). Also positive is the fact that the major part of consumed fruit became from own garden or orchard production (81%). We found statistically significant differences in fruit consumption between girls and boys and between own production of fruit in towns and villages.
