  • Nowadays, lesser known fruit species are a potential source of antioxidants. This also applies to interspecific crosses of rowan. Their cultivars were bred in the former Soviet Union with a view to their frost resistance as well as the fruit which could endure harsh northern conditions. The aim of the work was to make reference to antioxidant properties of selected cultivars of interspecific crosses of rowan. Altogether 6 cultivars were compared. The total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant capacity (TAC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and scavenging activity of the methanolic extract of fruit on nitric oxide (NO) were determined. The highest values of TPC were found to be in the fruit of the 'Likernaja' cultivar - 5.82 g of gallic acid.kg-1 of fresh mass (FM). High amounts of TPC were also observed in the 'Dezertnaja', 'Granatina' and 'Titovnaja' cultivars. Furthermore, there was high correlation between TPC and TAC (r2 = 0.9479). In addition, in the cultivars mentioned above there were also high total flavonoid contents and scavenging effect on NO. For example, 25% methanolic extracts of fruit of the 'Likernaja' cultivar decreased the influence of NO by 30.97%. The correlation coefficient between TPC and scavenging effect on NO was r2= 0.8851 and between TFC and NO r2= 0.8101.
