Description
  • Title: On the plasma treatment of carbonyl iron particles and their magnetorheology The long-term stability of magnetorheological (MR) suspensions based on carbonyl iron (CI) in silicone oil can be improved by the plasma treatment of particles surface in 50% Ar + 50% octafluorcyclobutane. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that after 2 min of modification about 6.5% of fluorine had been bonded to the surface layer of CI particles. Subsequently, fluorine present on particles can interact with methyl groups of silicone oil. The rheological behaviour of MR suspensions observed at the steady shear and small-strain oscillatory shear flows showed that systems on the basis of plasma-treated particles exhibit higher viscosity without magnetic field and thus improved long-term sedimentation stability. When the magnetic field is applied, the enhanced viscosities of suspensions caused by magnetic interactions between particles have approximately the same values irrespective of employed particles.
