Description
  • Biodegradation of polyethylene films with prooxidant additives were monitored by gas chromatography analysis of head-space gas in closed cultivation flasks. Concentration of oxygen was determined on column packed with molecular sieve 13X and concentration of carbon dioxide on column packed with Porapak R. The values were then used for calculation of a sample actual mineralization. Sample flasks with stoppers were specially designed for the experiment. The stoppers were equipped with three inlets enabling to sample head-space gas through gas tight septum and to flush the inner atmosphere with fresh air. High density polyethylene film and low density polyethylene films with content of prooxidant additives were subjected to weathering under natural condition exposed to sun light during 3 summer moths in south European climate. Samples preoxidized in this way were subsequently used for biodegradation test. Samples were mixed with small amount of fresh soil or mature compost serving as a microbial inoculum
