Description
  • The grain size classification is based on the profile intensity as estimated by the profile count NA carried out in the planar sections of examined materials. In order to simplify the measurement, the intercept count NL has also been introduced. For anisotropic materials, the measurement in three mutually perpendicular planes and/or directions is recommended by the ASTM E 112 Standard and the geometric means of obtained estimates are directly related to the spatial intensity . The possibility to use also the arthmetic mean of NL is mentioned as suitable for the estimation of the true intercept size. It is the puspose of the present paper to appreciate the quality of the recommended procedures and to estimate the possible error in the grain size and profile area estimation.
