  • %22Over the past decade new family of materials called polymer nanocomposites have emerged as potentially important composites for engineering, packaging and other applications. These materials can contain smectite clays as the nanosize filler. These claysare natural minerals that exhibit large aspect ratios and one dimension in the nanometer range. Our PVC/clay nanocomposites were prepared via melt compounding method using two kinds of Na-montmorillonite (nature clay and organophilic clay). The melt in tercalation of clay was carried out with a Buss KO-kneader, single-screw extruder. The effects of different conditions of melt intercalation are discussed. The most interesting outcome of this study was the changes in morphology of PVC/clay nanocomposites. The dispersion and exfoliation effect of silicate layers in the polymer matrix were studied by means of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). %22
