Description
  • Patients connected to a high-frequency oscillatory ventilator should be paralysed or highly sedated so that the ventilator is able to work. The aim of the study is to design a special %22Demand Flow System%22 allowing spontaneous breathing in patients ventilated using a high-frequency ventilator. The principle of the device is a fast and exact monitoring of pressure in the ventilatory circuit, followed by a separation of the pressure signal components generated by the oscillatory ventilator and by patient's breathing activity. The latest mentioned signal is used for a real-time control of the extra flow injected into the ventilatory circuit so that the extra flow could compensate the pressure changes generated by the patient. The system reduces imposed work of breathing by 80 % and it allows spontaneous breathing during high-frequency oscillatory ventilation.
