Description
  • There exists an enormous need of developing a reliable and well defined experimental method using miniaturized specimen, which should be capable of estimating conventional engineering parameters (e.g. yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, toughness etc.). Small Punch Test with its 30 years long history and great number of successful applications is one of the most promising techniques. In 2006, CEN released Workshop Agreement CWA 15627. Part B of this publication attempts to summarise the complete methodology of sample preparation, performing time independent test and processing data of it. At Department of Materials, FNSPE CTU has been made great effort to validate and improve the all-embracing methodology. Few crucial aspects not specified in CWA 15627 have been studied – for example an influence of clamping force and wear of a hemispherical punch. Furthermore, all procedures have been critically analysed and subsequently detailed in order to reach unambiguously defined procedure and the best possible reproducibility. Completed methods were applied to study various ferritic, martensitic, bainitic, austenitic and ODS steels. Fractographic analysis has been found to be an irreplaceable supplement of evaluation procedures employed within experiments, where changes in material are studied or structural heterogeneities occurred.
