Description
  • Mechanical properties of metastable austenitic steel were investigated using a novel grid indentation method. Under deformation martensitic laths are formed in this steel. As the martensite laths are of submicrometric dimensions, single spot nanoindentation failed and the grid indentation method had to be used. The method was applied on samples with three levels of predeformation. A matrix of 800 indentations was done on each sample. The results were plotted in form of a histogram and statistically evaluated using bimodal Gaussian distribution. The results allowed estimation of the hardness of the martensite laths and the austenite matrix. The volume fraction of martensite was also calculated and it corresponded well to the results obtained by the EBSD.
