Description	This paper describes two variants of the tree-structured self-organising map (TS-SOM) algorithm that are used in two different image-browsing and retrieval systems, GalSOM and PicSOM. It studies how methods used to optimise GalSOM work in PicSOM and makes some suggestions on parameter optimisation based on the results of heuristic analysis.
