Description
  • An improved version of the 555 highly stable controller has been prepared on the basis of modified MAE555 chip, packaged as A90. The goal of the design was to improve primarily the temperature stability of the timer, which was still questionable in the classical versions of the circuit. The attention was turned especially to the four Darlington pairs of the circuit (npn ones Q1+Q2 and Q3+Q4, and pnp ones Q10+Q11 and Q12+Q13 in the standard equivalent schematic). For improving the circuit, both standard SPICE and our CIA (Circuit Interactive Analyzer) programs have been used. Originally, the SPICE standard data file was obtained and converted automatically to the CIA input language using our software %22ConvWin for CIA.%22 This original software prepared for similar purposes has been created by the Delphi development system, and is able to convert practically arbitrary SPICE input file to the CIA one. The advantage of the CIA program with respect to the SPICE one consists in the ability to perform the sensitivity analysis in both DC and time domains (the SPICE sensitivity analysis works only in the DC domain). (The time-domain sensitivity analysis of our CIA program has been thoroughly described in the 2009 January issue of the Int. Journal of Electronics and Communications with impact factor 0.538 in Web of Science.) As a result of series of the simulations, several important changes to the circuit have been made. First, the Q11 and Q12 pnp transistors have been exchanged by other temperature more stable types called in the modified circuit Q32 and Q33. The internal node 17 in the standard equivalent schematic was completely cancelled, and a new resistor 25kOhm has been inserted to this part of the circuit. Moreover, for the transistors Q6 and Q8 (both pnp), the same new types have been used as those for Q11 and Q12. As a result of the circuit changes, both simulations and a measurement of the final circuit confirmed greater temperature stability of the controller.
