  • In this article, the design of a real-time high throughput lossless adaptive compression algorithm optimized for MEA recordings and its implementation on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is presented. The design has been optimized in terms of speed and efficient use of resources. The proposed method achieves compression ratios down to 25% with a measured throughput of 25 MB/s. An optimized algorithm for fast stream decompression on standard personal computers (PCs) is also presented. While employing the data structure and dependency knowledge, the algorithm provides better compression rates and higher throughput than universal compression programs.
