Description
  • We have developer and completed an apparatus and technique allowing us to test mockups of so called “endcaps” of the LHCb SciFi detector which is currently under development at CERN in Geneva. These tests were carried out using the experimental evaporative cooling circuit located in the building 887 in CERN (France, Prevessin). The circuit has been designed and modified by the team of the CTU participants. The several modification had to be implemented to the cooling circuit. For instance to lower evaporation pressured below the atmospheric pressure an extension consisted of number of valves, vacuum pump and pressure vessel has been implemented. With the lower evaporation pressures the temperatures between -30 and -55°C, needed for the tests, were achieved. Two different types of 53 cm long evaporators and two different endcap prototypes were tested. The original DAQ was developed as well. It uses one ELMB to accommodate and monitor temperature and pressure sensors located along the tested structures and parts of the circuit. The temperature gradients along the evaporators and photomultipliers inside the prototypes were monitored using 12 sensors. Also the temperatures of the outer case shell, output vapor and input liquidwere observed. The setup is fed through one complete line of the C3F8 refrigerant. Results evaluating a concept and data summary report “ Evaporative-cooling measurements at CERN -H8 area, Bldg. 887, performed for the LHCb upgrade project (42 pages)“ has been written, submitted and defended within CERN LHCb community on October 14, 2013.
