Description
  • The aim of the study is to develop the methodology for testing the mechanical properties of rat bones. This project is applied in the collaboration with the First Faculty of Medicine Charles University in Prague. Direct biomechanical testing of bone undoubtedly provides more information about mechanical integrity then exist several methods, e.g. Ultrasound Transmission Velocity (UTV) and Bone Mineral Density (BMD). These methods are widely used as possible predictors of the bending strength of osteoporotic long bones from ovariectomized rats that may simulate a model for the human postmenopausal osteoporosis. Three-point bending test is useful for measuring the mechanical properties of bones from small animals. In the bending test the whole bone is loaded in bending until failure. This article describes methods of the determination of cross-section modulus Womin of rat bones that, together with load Fmax, are necessary for the calculation of the bending strength Sigmao.
