Description
  • *Engineers who have been involved with the design and construction of artificial slalom courses believe that using hydraulic models to design the courses is best procedure. The alternative method of design by calculation would be virtually impossible unless some very simple geometrical cross-sections were adopted. Such a procedure would produce a far less natural effected would be open to question on the reliability of the calculations. A model, on the other hand, can be adjusted in the laboratory and the effects of the flow conditions observed directly. There is a long history of hydraulic models of free surface water flows and there is no doubt that they can give a very accurate representation of water levels, flow directions, and velocities. The history of modelling whitewater slalom courses, however, is shorter and the predictions less accurate for the smaller details of water flow which are actually of crucial importance whitewater racers. Thus, it is thought at the present time that a combination approach of using a model to determine the overall characteristics of the course and the ability to adjust obstacles in the actual course itself will yield the best result.
