Description
  • The problems connected with the fouling of ballast with fine-grained particles pushed through from the underbed and the rail geometric position may be solved by positioning reinforcing or stabilisation geocomposites under the ballast and by the ballast renewal. Two test sections with muddy spots situated on railway tracks with high traffic volumes in the Czech Republic were selected for the practical verification of the this procedure. A monitoring campaign of over three years was performed in both sections involving regular checks of the rail geometric parameters by the passage of the track recording car and the measurement of the load-bearing capacity by means of plate and impact load tests. Geosynthetics were sampled from trial holes during the operational verification and exposed to subsequent laboratory evaluation to verify the degradation of the physical characteristics of geosynthetics. The results show that the application of stabilisation geocomposites in test sections has fulfilled the expectations in terms of the prevention of the ballast fouling development from the underbed and the stabilisation of the rail geometric position. Another non-negligible contribution is the economy in subsequent maintenance and repair expenditures and the minimisation of track closures for traffic at problematic sites.
