Description
  • The most common failure of masonry structures is cracking of bed joints due to excessive shear loading. This paper is focused on the performance of bed joints having various thicknesses and being reinforced with large-size aggregates of different properties, when subjected to pure shear or shear and compression. In particular, the attention is paid to the damage localization, utilizing the non-local formulation of anisotropic damage model. The analysis results indicate that the bed joints of lower thickness exhibit higher strength and that the presence of low quality aggregates, such as crushed bricks, contributes to a distributed cracking instead of its localization into a major crack. The findings explain the good performance of many historical masonry structures.
