Description	The paper focuses on the description of methodology for the calculation of river floodplain retention capacity. The method is based on use of spatial data and GIS tools. The method is presented on the section of Lužnice river. It is shown that the influence of floodplain retnetion on the flood wave transformation is very small and that there are much more important processes which are playing role.
