Description
  • The Josef Regional Underground Research Centre (Josef URC) forms an integral part of the Centre of Experimental Geotechnics, a department of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague. The main part of the Josef URC is made up of a large gallery which has been used for experimentation purposes since June 2007. The Josef gallery was originally excavated in the 1980s as part of the exploration of local gold-bearing deposits. The total length of the galleries is 8km, more than 3.5km of which is currently in use. This unique underground research centre provides educational courses for students and young scientists, the ideal environment for in-situ experiments and guided tours for the general public. No other comparable science and technology park is currently in existence in the Czech Republic or elsewhere in Europe. Educational activities are based on the teaching of both Bachelor and Master´s degree courses and include the opportunity for students to work on their experimentally-oriented bachelor, diploma and doctoral theses. The Josef URC also provides educational services for international students and experts. Together with teaching, the gallery is used principally for research related particularly to radioactive waste disposal. Several in-situ experiments are currently underway at the facility. Main project of the facility focused on methodology of preparation and evaluation of laboratory and in-situ tests is supported by the Czech Ministry for Trade and Industry, project no. FR TI1/362 and led by Nuclear Research Institute in Řež.
