Description	The paper introduces recent results concerning estimation of actual mechanical characteristics of historical built-in wood in compression by means of small sample testing. This semi-destructive method uses core drilling technique. Detailed studies have been carried out on cores of about 5 mm in diameter which are tested in a special fixture enabling the core cylinder to be loaded on two opposite parallel lines. Here stresses and the strains were modelled by the FEM approach and the displacement field on the core ends was measured by moiré-interferometry to check the numerical model and to judge the fixture.
