Description
| - Bitumen and heavy oil have become mainstream energy resources. Accurate thermochemical and transport properties for these materials are key inputs for the oil industry. For example, viscosity is of crucial importance for production, transport, and refining operations. Since bitumen and heavy oils are complex multicomponent fluids and multiphase over a broad range of temperatures, (1) three main issues must be taken into account when reporting, interpreting, and using viscosity data: sample identity (origin or geographical location, elevation or depth of formation, sample pretreatment history); (2) experimental conditions (measurement method, temperature, shear conditions, sample history during measurements); and (3) applicability, restrictions, and errors of certain experimental methods and techniques when applied to such complex fluids.
