Description
  • Voles of the genus Microtus represent one of the most speciose mammalian genera in the Holarctic. The phylogentic relationships were estimated for 48 species using sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (Jaarola et al. 2004). Four well-supported monophyletic lineages were identified. The genus Chionomys, the subgenus Microtus, the subgenus Terricola, and the previously described %22Asian%22 lineage were strongly supported. However, relationships among the main Microtus branches were not resolved, suggesting a rapid and potentially simultaneous radiation of a widespread ancestor early in the history of the genus. This phylogenetic structure shows the considerable potential of Microtus for analysis of historical and ecological determinant of speciation in small mammals. It is evident that speciation is an ongoing process in the genus and that the molecular data provides a vital insight into current species limits as well as cladogenetic events of the past.

To naznačuje rychlou a potenciálně simultánní radiaci široce rozšířeného předka v raných fázích divergence rodu. (cs)
