  • Electron optical computations play an important role in the design of instruments such as scanning and transmission electron microscopes. This has led to the development of special software packages that attempt to meet a number of specific requirements that cannot be covered with more general software. The progress in the instrumentation induced by the ability to compute accurately has been often overlooked and the practical realization aspects are often more emphasized than the effort in the design stage. The development in electron optics could be easily traced in the proceedings of earlier electron microscopy meetings. More recently it has shifted specialized CPO (Charged Particle Optics) conferences, where the problems specific for microscopy play only a smaller part.
