  • Quantitation of in vivo 1 H MR spectra can be severely hampered by insuffisient suppresion of water signals, which may be related to the dispersion of water T 1 relaxation times and to B 1 field inhomogenity, especially if a transmit/receive surface coil is used. Variable flip-angle methods WET and VAPOR provide excellent T 1 insensitivity and low SAR, but B 1 sensitivity is still a problem with simple surface coils. Outer volume suppresion (OVS) may be desirable if considerable SAR increase is acceptable. SWAMP, flipping the water magnetization by transition region of adiabatic inversion pulses, achieves excellent B1 insensitivity, but at the expense of much higher SAR, and either the interpulse delays are too short for sufficient gradient crushers or OVS, or its efficiency suffers from T 1 sensitivity. we propose a superior type of methods, related to both mentioned classes.
