  • The service life of components designed to operate under loading at elevated temperatures is limited by the creep deformation and fracture phenomena Unfortunately, the complete physical description of the creep phenomenon is still not available. Phenomenological approaches are used instead, but they do not provide sufficient accuracy and reliability for residual creep life assessment. The most important factors which make the results unreliable are analyzed in the present paper; some of them are illustrated by examples from our recently published creep results on creep resistant structural steels. The factors are mainly a natural scatter in the material's properties due to manufacturing processes and extrapolations involved in the procedure of residual life assessment. Some general suggestions to overcome these problems are made and the need for a new approach and new experimental techniques is presented.
