Description
  • The capability of pre-cracked Charpy type specimens for prediction of fracture toughness characteristics for full scale (1T) specimens has been tested. Several methodologies - the toughness scaling models and master curve methodology have been followed. Low carbon manganese cast steel was used as experimental material being tested as the candidate material for container casks of spent nuclear fuel. For fracture toughness determination the larger sets of three point bend specimens tested at one temperature were used. The Dodds-Anderson toughness scaling model was applied for toughness data correction from small specimens being combined with master curve methodology for fracture toughness - temperature diagram and strain rate effects prediction. The Koppenhoefer scaling diagram arising from Weibull stress determination was also tested supplying good correlation of predicted data with real behaviour.
