Description
  • The punishment of Marsyas is depicted also on the western facade of the Prague Belvedere (1538-1550) of the Czech king and Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I. The sculptor, Paolo della Stella, knew the moralist interpretation of the myth and understood Apollo to bethe saviour of Marsyas' soul. This is what the butterfly could represent on the Prague relief, as it is prepared to fly as soon as Apollo's knife completes its work. Ferdinand could have been presented here as second Apollo, strictly punishing sinners, but only so that he might save their souls.
