Description	The paper presents an historical overview of research on the fortified places of the La Tène period in Bohemia and Moravia. It analyses its motives and research aims from the first works at the turn of the 20th century, through the decades of intensive excavation activities between 1950 and 1990, right up to post cold-war times. After World War II, all excavations, with one single exception, were undertaken by research institutions as systematic, long-term excavations at places that were unthreatened by destruction. The aims of these excavations, however, were rather non-scientific, guided as they were by curiosity, personal or institutional prestige or by political motivation.
