Description	La démarche préalable à toute étude des restes humains anciens, que ce soit lors de lŽétude dŽun fossile ou dŽune population ancienne, consiste à estimer le sexe et lŽ.GAMMA.ge au décès de lŽindividu. Une seule approche objective pour une diagnose sexuelle fiable cŽest lŽutilisation des fonctions discriminantes (FD). Mais les os coxaux sont souvent endomagés ou absents et les FD du cr.GAMMA.ne, de la mandibule et des os longs ont montré qu'elles sont hautement spécifiques de la population. Une nouvelle stratégie a été proposée pour une diagnose sexuelle basée sur les concepts de diagnose primaire et secondaire. La diagnose primaire est faite à partir de lŽos coxal car sa forme et son format résultent dŽune adaptation à deux contraintes majeurs - la locomotion bipède et la parturition. Ces contraintes étant partagées par toutes les populations dŽHomo sapiens, il est donc possible de définir un dimorphisme commun chez Homo sapiens sapiens, quelle que soit la population con First approach to the study of ancient human remains (of fossils or of sub-recent age) consists of the sex determination and age estimation of the individual skeletons. Only objective approach of reliable sex determination is the utilisation of discriminant functions (DF) of pelvic bones. Unfortunately, the pelvic bones are frequently damaged or absent and the DF of skulls, mandibles and long bones showed its population specificity. A new strategy (approach) based on primary and secondary diagnosis was proposed. The primary diagnosis is made on pelvic bones because its form and magnitude are results of the adaptation to two major constraints ů locomotion and parturition. These constraints are common for all human populations and it is possible to define the same level of sexual dimorphism even for ancient populations of Homo sapiens.
