| - Studies of biogeochemical processes along the hydrologic pathway, from precipitation through lakes, lead to the following conceptual framework for controls on Al and P mobility, and thus trophic status of oligotrophic surface water: Al from chemical weathering of primary minerals is eluviated from upper (highly acidic) and illuviated to lower (less acidic) soil horizons where it is retained as Al(OH)3 and other secondary mineral or amorphous phases. Phosphorus from atmospheric deposition, canopy leaching, chemical weathering of primary minerals, and mineralization of organic matter is translocated downward in the soil profile and adsorbed on Al and Fe hydroxide secondary phases in the mineral soil. This is typically below the zone of peak fine-root activity for most forest tree species.

Oligotrofní vody jsou typické nízkou produkcí fytoplanktonu. Více než sto let studií naznačuje, že fosfor je limitující nutrient v povrchových vodách.
