Description
| - Boreal upland forest ecosystems are well known and important sink for the greenhouse gas methane (CH4) due to methane oxidizing bacteria (methanotrophs) in the soil. Recent evidence, however, suggest that boreal upland forest ecosystems may act as occasional sources of CH4 (Mikkelsen et al., 2011; Peltola et al., 2012; Shoemaker et al., 2014). Peltola and colleagues (2012) found that the canopy of a boreal upland forest located in Hyytiälä (SMEAR II), Southern Finland, emitted CH4 while simultaneously the forest floor was a sink of CH4. Over the last decade there is growing evidence that vegetation can act as a significant source of CH4; however, the mechanisms of the emissions are still largely unknown (Keppler et al., 2006; Bloom et al., 2010; Covey et al., 2012). In the summer 2013, measurements from Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) around SMEAR II station showed that both stems and shoots emitted small amounts of CH4 (Machacova et al., 2013).
