Description
| - The role of water in the climatic processes of the Earth is incontestable. If not considering underground water, precipitation represents the main water supply component in the water balance. In contrary, the main part of water loss in terrestrial ecosystems is evapotranspiration (ET) apart from mountains where run off may dominate. The ratio between potential evapotranspiration (PET) and precipitation can indicate the prevailing hydric regime of the field, landscape, region or larger areas. This study aimes to use meteorological data from 17 stations all around the Czech Republic to derive PET according to Priestley-Taylor, in particular, PET/rain ratio over the past almost 50 years. The results are used to detect changes and possible trends in PET/rain ratio to indicate the changes in drought occurrence at different sites. The statistical relevance of these trends is investigated at annual, seasonal and monthly levels. The results show, that the trend in drying of the country is not so pronounced at the year scale. It is much clearer for shorter period April – June, and all three months individually show evident increase in PET/rain ratio at majority of examined sites. Moreover, the relationship between the slope of the trend lines of PET/rain ratio and the PET/rain ratio itself is assessed. For both year and April – June period there is a positive correlation which means that drier localities are getting drier more rapidly comapred to the more humid areas.
