| - Náhodná strategie je nejlepší strategií organismů jak se vyrovnat s nepředvídatelnými přírodními podmínkami. Je ale obtížné rozeznat ji od neadaptivní náhodnosti ve fenotypové produkci a jejích přesvědčivých ukázek je málo. V této práci popisujeme novou metodu určování adaptivní stochastické polyfenie a aplikujeme ji na následující problém. Na podzim každá partenogenetická samička mšice Rhopalosiphum padi stojí před rozhodnutím, zda již produkovat sexuální potomky, kteří se páří a produkují chladu odolná (přezimující) vajíčka, nebo pokračovat v produkci na chlad citlivých partenogenetických samiček, které potenciální představují další namnožení vlastní genetické informace, s rizikem ztráty všech potomk?, přijde-li zima brzy (cs)
- The best strategy for an organism to deal with unpredictable environmental conditions is a stochastic one, but it is not easy to distinguish it from nonadaptive randomness in phenotype production, and its convincing demonstrations are lacking. Here we describe a new method for detection of adaptive stochastic polyphenism and apply it to the following problem. In fall, each female of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi, faces a decision either to produce sexuals, which mate and lay cold-tolerant eggs, or to continue production of cold-sensitive parthenogenetic females, which potentially yields a higher population growht rate but is risky because a cold winter can kill all of her descendants
