Description
  • The spine development was assessed in growing rats following pinealectomy or partial sensorimotor cortical area damage. Four experimental groups of a total 68 Wistar albino rats aged 3-4 weeks were operated - pinealectomy, sensorimotor cortical area damage, shame operations - craniotomy or craniotomy and durotomy. The rats were evaluated 4 months after surgery by X-rays and histological examination of the brain. Scoliosis of 9-14 degrees was developed in 5 out of 22 animals after pinealectomy and in 8 out of 24 animals (10-24 degrees) after sensorimotor cortical area damage. The scolioses were non structural. The scoliosis could be caused by a disorder between inhibitory and facilitating areae of central nervous system. The new hypothesis of scoliosis aetiology was introduced.
