Description
  • The article examines political culture in Nanun, a West African chiefdom which survived until our days but was recently exposed to serious tests in the form of armed conflicts with the traditionally acephalous Konkomba, who, as settlers in Nanun, gradually exceeded in numbers the local Nanumba society based on the complementary opposition of the immigrant chiefly element and the autochthonous earth cult element. Naam, often translated as chieftaincy, appears as the politico-religious principle around which the life of the Nanumba people revolves. Alternation of the naam between two chiefly houses has been a rule for the last two hundred years. Ritual aspects of succession are described in detail.
