Description
  • The seeds necessary for the establishment of species rich grassland can be obtained through direct harvesting in seed source semi-natural vegetations. To check this possibility in the case of the Arrhenatherion grasslands, three experimental trials were performed of this type of vegetation in the Czech Republic, Italy and Poland. At the first re-growth 2009, harvesting was carried out with the main techniques available, harvesting as green hay, as dry hay (hay-making), threshing and seed stripping. The efficiency of the several techniques was evaluated as concerns both the no. of seeds and the no. of species harvested. GH seems to be the most efficient technique, as it harvests nearly all seeds present, while OST harvests 22-35 % of the standing seed yield. Both DH and SSp showed efficiency higher than OST and lower than GH, while SSh showed a low efficiency. 60-70 % of the meadow species can be harvested as seed with one intervention at the end of the first re-growth. No harvesting of several species is mainly due to many species not being present as seed at the harvesting time and only to a small amount to the inefficiency of harvesting itself.
