Description
  • Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni), the best-known western Palaearctic tortoise species, has a rare distribution pattern comprising the Mediterranean areas of the Iberian, Apennine, and Balkan Peninsulas, as well as Sicily, Corsica and Sardinia. The western part of this range is traditionally considered habitat for the small-sized and brightly-coloured subspecies T. h. hermanni, while in the Balkans the larger and less brightly-coloured T. h. boettgeri occurs. In recent years, this taxonomy has been challenged and the two subspecies were suggested to be full species while central Dalmatian populations of T. h. boettgeri were considered a third species, T. hercegovinensis. Using an approximately 1150 bp long mtDNA fragment comprising the cytochrome b gene and the adjacent portion of the tRNA-Thr gene, we investigated whether mtDNA diversity corresponds to the two subspecies concept or to the more recently suggested partition into three species. We identified seven closely-related haplotypes fro

  • Západní část areálu T. hermanni je osídlena poddruhem T. h. hermanni, zatímco T. h boettgeri osídluje Balkán. Naše výsledky potvrdily konspecifitu obou poddruhů a doporučujeme užívání tohoto tradičního taxonomického dělení. Fylogeografie druhu byla značně ovlivněna v glaciálním období, kdy tyto želvy obývaly refugia v jižní Evropě. (cs)
